Cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest island in the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The island is divided into three geological zones: the mountains in the north and south, and the plain in the middle. In total, the island measures approximately 9,251 square kilometers (3,572 square miles).

The island became independent on 16 August 1960. However, in 1974, in response to a Greek mainland coup d’état, Turkey invaded northern Cyprus and occupied over a third of the island. The situation remains unchanged today despite efforts to reach a settlement led by the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) for Western Europe. A 'Green Line' dividing the two parts of the island is patrolled by UN troops. There are hopes that the island will be united one day. Cyprus was one of ten new countries to join the European Union (EU) on 1 May 2004.
